The course is a 2 year (FDA) Foundation Degree in Costume Design and Realisation, with a recommended optional third year top up that will give you a BA (Hons) degree.
This is a full-time course that supplies high contact time with staff, most materials, outstanding workshop facilities and equipment, with full-time access to enable you to hone your skills to an industry standard.
We are equally interested in developing both your design and practical skills. We run workshops in a wide and diverse range of specialisms from pattern cutting through to tailoring, millinery and costume prop-making. Fabric manipulation, printing, dying and breaking down as well as costume supervision are all areas we teach and encourage students to develop skills in. History of Costume sessions provide a solid foundation from which to experiment and innovate.
We are highly collaborative in our approach and work closely with other departments, hair and make-up, props, set design, performers and technical departments. There are opportunities to do live projects, a balance of shows in our fully equipped Theatre space and outside commissions. The range of performers we work with is diverse from dance through musical theatre to highly experimental devised work. We believe strongly in industry links, work experience and ensuring future employability.
Year 1- foundation degree
You will be introduced to a wide range of methods and materials used in costume design and construction. This includes pattern cutting, machining and hand sewing skills, costume history, and visual communication.
Through internal shows, exhibition, commissions and individual projects you will get to practice what you have learnt in preparation for the second year.
Year 2- foundation degree

This is achieved through work experience and your own personal progression in the development of marketing yourself as a costume designer/maker. You will also be encouraged to develop contacts gained through work experience in preparation for employment.
Year 3 BA (honours)
This is an optional third year made up of 2 core units and a dissertation that leads to a full honours degree.
